Who Is Sonya McGuire?

Sonya McGuire is a preachers’ daughter who learned to sing, act and appreciate music at a very early age. With music playing such a dominant role in the home, Sonya had no choice than to follow the unofficial “family business". Sonya chose drums to express her musical creativity and talent.

Later she developed a love for singing and directing, quickly becoming the obvious choice for musical director at her father’s church. Thus her God-given skills took her from behind the drums to the forefront of the music ministry. With the experience gained from collaborating with other artist and choirs in the metro-Atlanta area, she co-founded the group Agape. Sonya's vocal and leadership abilities were honed during a successful two-year period with the group.

Sonya’s unique ministry and style of raise and worship Sonya ultimately transitioned from Agape to form the revolutionary gospel singing force, God's Own. While with God's Own, Sonya traveled the eastern seaboard electrifying audiences, offering them an "original" praise and worship experience.

With vocal ability that comparable to none and marveled by many, Sonya incorporates thought provoking lyrics with unmistakable jazz overtones into her music. Her organic songwriting and ability to blend soul, traditional gospel, jazz, funk, praise and worship has caught the attention of many music legends and record executives. Her gift has made room for her to share the stage with artists such as Tye Tribett, Donnie McClurkin, Dorinda Clark-Cole, Kim Burrell, Marvin Sapp, Marcus Cole, Natalie Wilson and S.O.P., Rizen, Nancy Jackson, Angela Spivey, Youthful Praise, Mary Mary, Eugene Cole and Purpose, Crystal Rucker, Benard Johnson, Twinkie Clark-Terrell and the Georgia Mass Choir.

Sonya is no stranger to center stage as she has opened for gospel greats such as Karen Clark-Sheard, Israel Houghton and New Breed, Beverly Crawford, Timothy Wright, Douglas Miller and Shae Norman. She has also performed at multiple NAACP events. Sonya was also selected to sing back up for Universal Recording Artist, Mariah Carey, during an inspirational selection at the 2003 NBA All Star Game in Atlanta, Georgia. Sonya dazzled the audience recently at Ricky Dillard and New Generation's CD release "Unplugged...the way church used to be" with two songs from her upcoming solo project. In December 2005, Sonya's music ministry spread internationally as she ministered during a twenty-one day tour of Europe including such places as Italy, Milan, France and nearly twenty additional cities. She’s also ministered in 18 cities in Asia, from Japan to Malaysia. The presence of God was prevalent during the concerts which evolved into worship and praise services. Sonya McGuire can be described in one word, anointed. She is truly a multi-gifted individual. She is a gospel singer, recording artist, songwriter, musician and has ministry at the heart of all she does.

Her passion for music and mission to win souls for Christ is at the heart of her ministry and transcends racial, cultural and even language barriers. Sonya currently resides with her three beautiful children in the outer suburbs of metro-Atlanta. With all her accomplishments, she is yet a faithful servant in her community and is licensed as a national evangelist. Sonya continues to share her gift within the Body of Christ, conducting choir workshops, Praise and Worship conferences and music seminars throughout the US. After years of dreaming and hard work, Sonya was nominated Best New Artist at the 2008 Gospel Choice Awards as well as Best New Female Artist at the YGEA Awards.
